African Miners Return to Work
Workers are returning to a South African platinum mine after violent labor strikes that left 44 strikers dead in what has been called the worst police violence since apartheid. “We have only seen a handful of miners arriving, but we did see a busload go past here,” said an Al Jazeera reporter near the Marikana facility. Officials at the Lonmin-run site have said that workers who do not return on time will be fired. Union officials and management are meeting with the help of government and religious leaders to resolve the disagreement over pay that caused the strike.
