Afghan Woman Won't Wed Rapist
It looks like Afghan authorities are coming to their senses. The woman previously imprisoned for being raped will not have to marry her attacker. The woman, identified only as Gulnaz, was imprisoned for adultery after she reported that her husband's cousin had raped her. Afghan President Hamid Karzai had pardoned her, calling the case a “misjudgment,” but her plight prompted a further international outcry when it was reported that she had agreed to marry her attacker on condition of being released. In an interview with CNN's Fareed Zakaria, Karzai said: "It's up to her to decide who to marry or who not to marry." Gulnaz is now staying at a women's shelter with her daughter.
