OWS Round-Up: Latinas (And Other Mujeres), Civil Rights Elders, and Ani DiFranco
A lot of awesome actions went down at this weekend's Occupy in New York:
-
On Sunday, Adelente Alliance—a non-profit serving Spanish-speaking
immigrant communities in Nueva York—organized a take-over of Zuccotti
Park by women, for the purpose of saying "NO to unfair immigration laws,
NO to sexism, NO to racism and bigotry, NO to domestic violence, NO to
oppression of male-dominated traditions and cultural practices, NO to an
economic and political system that renders us silent, invisible and
illegal." Lots of Latinas showed up in traditional dress, marching with colorful bilingual signs, and joined by their non-Latina sisters in unity. Amazing pictures here.
-
Also on Sunday, Elders from the Civil Rights Movement symbolically
passed their torch to OWS, recognizing it as "the transformative
movement of the 21st Century." The Council of Elders, including Rev.
James Lawson, Jr., and Dolores Huerta, held an interfaith service in
Liberty Square before marching to Washington Square Park for a
candlelight vigil.
-Later that
night, musician/activist Ani DiFranco, joined by fellow musician Anais
Mitchell, left her show at Le Poisson Rouge to march to the nearby
Washington Square Park to join the vigil, too. Washington Square Park
blog has photos and updates of the vigils.
