As Obama's presidency nears its end, assessments of his reforms are beginning to appear. But editor of The Nation Katrina Vanden Heuvel says that the most significant changes are coming not from the man on top, but from movements at the bottom ... Katrina Vanden Heuvel compares the Occupy to other great transformational movements, like the Labor movement, the Environmental movement, and the Civil Rights movement in the '60s. − RT
Dominant Social Theme: There is a great freedom movement sweeping the world.
Free-Market Analysis: Ms. Katrina Vanden Heuvel recently appeared on-air on RT television to discuss OWS and the upcoming elections. She spoke of marrying the OWS movement to "politics of conviction" and said that while Barack Obama had been a "reform" president, he hadn't gone far enough. She also indicated her support for disbanding NATO and strengthening the UN.
We are not so optimistic as Ms. Vanden Heuvel. Her emphasis on changing the US system from below in tandem with "politics of conviction" shows, in our view, how OWS is being manipulated into becoming a movement that formally campaigns for change THROUGH the current US sociopolitical system.
