Since 9/11, relentless fearmongering has
produced what NSA expert James Bamford has termed the
“security-industrial complex,” a revolving door between those
generating the fears and those profiting from them (Politico, September
8). Some $690 billion has been spent on the emerging national
surveillance state with results documented in the Surveillance in the
Homeland series.
Bamford fears we have reached the
point of "no return." But it is our hope that the more people come to
understand the dimensions of the system erected in the shadows, the
more chance that we can together make the current budget crisis an
opportunity to put on the brakes and begin to roll back the
surveillance state. We hope this Truthout series will generate action
and that our website privacySOS.org will become a resource for the kind of local activity that can begin to turn the situation around.
